BINGHAMTON, NY –The New Jersey Devils today acquired defenseman Ryan Murphy from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for defenseman Michael Kapla. Murphy will report to Binghamton. The announcement was made by New Jersey Devils Executive Vice President/General Manager & Alternate Governor Ray Shero.
Murphy, 25, is currently in his second professional season with the Wild organization, and played five seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes organization. This season, the right-shooting blue-liner has scored three goals and 12 assists for 15 points and 12 penalty minutes in 35 regular-season games with Minnesota’s AHL affiliate, Iowa Wild. He has also appeared in two games with Minnesota this season. In 174 regular-season NHL games, he has 8 goals, and 34 assists for 42 points, and 42 penalty minutes. He has notched 17 goals, 92 assists and 109 points in 172 AHL regular-season games and played in the 2015 AHL All-Star Game. Murphy has appeared in one Stanley Cup Playoff game and five Calder Cup Playoff games (two assists) in his career. He played four seasons of junior hockey with Kitchener (OHL), where he was named to the All-Rookie Team (2009-10), OHL First All-Star Team (2010-11) and two OHL Second All-Star Teams (2011-12 & 2012-13). The 5-11, 185lb. defenseman was selected by Carolina in the first round, 12th overall, in the 2011 NHL Draft. The native of Aurora, Ontario represented Team Canada at the 2013 World Junior Championships.
The Devils return home tomorrow against the Rochester Americans and Saturday against the Belleville Senators at 7:05 p.m. Friday is April the Giraffe’s Baby Shower.
