BLOG UPDATE (DAY 3 / 9:30 a.m.)
The team had dinner at Red Bull Stadium last night. They got to tour the field and were able to take their two-touch game to the next level. After dinner, there were several games to partake in - frisbee, jingo, cornhole and spike ball. Some played, but after such a long day some also chose to just enjoy the opportunity to get to know the other prospects in a more relaxed setting.
This morning, the players participated in a three-on-three tournament. Team Elias (Akira Schmid, Ty Smith, Jeremey Groleau, Colby Sissons, Max Veronneau, Brett Seen, Fabian Zetterlund, Aarne Talvitie) won in decisive fashion with an 8-2 win over Team Stevens (Colton White, Jocktan Chainey, Michael McLeod, Joey Anderson, Marian Studenic, John Edwards, Ryan Schmelzer).
Cam Johnson was recovering from a 24-hour bug and 19-year-old Brandon Perrone from the New Jersey Titans of the North American Hockey League (US Tier 2) got the call as an emergency goalie and made the most of his opportunity. He was putting on a show with great save after great save and earning lots of oohs and ahhs from the crowd on hand at Barnabas Health Hockey House.
This afternoon the prospects had the chance to talk with Andy Greene, Corey Schneider and Kyle Palmieri about what it means to be a Devil and what their experiences were like throughout their development process. They also heard from head coach of the University of Wisconsin and of the 2018 US Olympic team Tony Granato, who spoke about leadership, and from former NHL player and current scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Kevin Stevens, who shared his story of going from NHL All Star to hitting rock bottom while addicted to pain killers and how he managed to recover. He warned the players about the dangers and talked about some of the warning signs so they could avoid the struggle he went through.
You can read more about it from a player’s perspective in Nathan Bastian’s Camp Blog (link me up!).
Tonight the players head to Citi Field to see the New York Mets take on the Philadelphia Phillies.
