WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins scored four first-period goals and defeated the Binghamton Devils, 7-4, on Saturday night in front of over 8,000 fans at Mohegan Sun Arena.
The Penguins took a 1-0 lead on the power play just 3:42 into the game as Jean-Sebastian Dea was left alone in front of the net. Garrett Wilson fed Dea who was wide open and deked out goaltender Cam Johnson for the one-goal lead on his 18th of the year from Wilson and Andrey Pedan.
Tom Sestito gave the Penguins a two-goal lead just 19 seconds later as he was left alone in the right wing circle. Christian Thomas fed Sestito and he immediately sent the puck by the pads of Johnson for a 2-0 lead. The goal was Sestito’s sixth of the year from Thomas and Jarred Tinordi at 4:01 of the first period.
Sestito helped set up Jarrett Burton’s eighth goal of the year to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead. Burton ripped the original shot off the cross bar, however, followed up and beat Johnson with the lone assist going to Sestito at 10:24 of the first.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finished out the scoring in the first period with 3:24 remaining as Zach Trotman’s shot from the left point beat Johnson low just as Kevin Rooney was coming out of the pentlay box. The goal was Trotman’s sixth of the year from Thomas and Burton and the Penguins took a 4-0 lead into the intermission along with a 17-10 shot advantage.
The Devils answered back in mthe second period to pull within three goals. Jake Walman forced a turnover and broke free from the defense to snap a shot on net that beat goaltender Michael Leighton for his fourth of the year. The goal was unassisted and the Devils trailed 4-1 after Walman’s tally.
Blake Pietila deflected a Walman shot from the right point to pull the Devils back within in two goals. Rooney fed Walman and Pietila deflected the shot by the right leg pad of Leighton with just 1:55 left in the second period. The goal was Pietila’s 12th of the year from Walman and Rooney and the Devils trailed 4-2 to start the third.
The two teams combined for five goals in the third period and the Penguins came away with a 7-4 win after an empty-net goal. Jacob MacDonald and Jan Mandat each scored and Tariq Hammond recorded his first professional point while Daniel Sprong scored and Christian Thomas had a pair. Johnson was credited with the loss, stopping 29 of 35 while Leighton had the win, stopping 26 of 30.
