BINGHAMTON, NY – Mackenzie Blackwood stopped all 18 shots he faced and Jacob MacDonald had a three-point night as the Binghamton Devils ended a six game losing streak with a 5-0 victory over the visiting Rochester Americans in front of 3,592 fans at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday.
Nick Lappin scored the lone goal of the first period to put the Devils up 1-0 over the visiting Americans. Lappin took a pass in the has marks and fired a wrist shot by goaltender Adam Wilcox for his team-leading 10th goal of the year and 15th point. Assists on Lappin’s goal were credited to Bracken Kearns and Josh Jacobs at 6:18 of the first period. Binghamton led Rochester 1-0 after 20 minutes and outshot the Americans, 13-9.
Blake Pietila fired in a rebound 14:12 into the second period to put the Devul up 2-0 over the Amerians. Blake Speers flew down the right wing side of the ice and sent a low shot on net that was denied by Wilcox with the leg pad. The reobund went right to Pietila and he beat Wilcox for his fifth of the season with assists from Speers and Jacob MacDonald.
Joe Blandisi planted himself at the hash marks and deflected a shot by the pads of Wilcox for a 3-0 advantage heading into the third period. Jacobs sent a shot into traffic from the right point position and Blandisi got the final touch for his third of the year from Jacobs and Lappin for a three-goal lead going into the final period. Binghamton held Rochester to just two shots in the second period for a 28-11 lead through 40 minutes.
Binghamton added two more goals in the third period. Michael Kapla found MacDonald in the right wing circle and he beat Wilcox for his sixth of the season and second point of the night to give the Devils a 4-0 advantage. Assists were given to Kapla and Blandisi at 11:26 of the third.
Viktor Loov added to the lead as he fired a shot from the left circle that beat Wilcox on the left side for a 5-0 lead 12:41 into the final period. The goal was Loov’s second of the year from MacDonald and Jan Mandat. The assist was MacDonald’s third point of the night and the final score was 5-0.
Blackwood stopped all 18 shots he faced for the shutout while Wilcox denied 31 of 36 in the loss.
