DEVILS FALL TO PENGUINS IN PRESEASON OPENER, 6-2

WILKES-BARRE, PA  – The Binghamton Devils fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the preseason opener, 6-2, at Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday night.
 
The Penguins tallied the first three goals of the game in the first period just 6:14 apart. Garrett Wilson opened the scoring 5:36 into the game as he beat Devils’ goaltender Scott Wedgewood for the 1-0 lead. Tom Kostopoulos extended the lead to two goals at 11:53 with assists from Zach Aston-Reese and Daniel Sprong. Aston-Reese and Sprong connected again to assist an Adam Johnson goal to put the Penguins up 3-0 at the 13:09 mark of the opening frame.
 
Binghamton converted on its first power play of the night as Tim Erixon let a shot go from the point that was deflected by Jan Mandat and by Penguins’ goaltender Tristian Jarry with 4:49 left in the first period. Austin Cangelosi was credited with the secondary helper on Mandat’s power-play goal.
 
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton added a goal late in the first period to regain its three-goal lead over the Devils. Zach Trotman beat Wedgewood with just 0:49 left to send the Penguins to the locker room up 4-1 after twenty minutes. 
 
After no scoring for most of the second period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Dominic Simon potted his first of the preseason to move the Penguins out front 5-1. The lone assist on Simon’s goal was credited to Garrett Wilson.
 
Shortly after, Binghamton’s Nathan Bastian fired a snap shot from the right wing circle over the left shoulder of Jarry to pull the Devils back within three with only 0:56 left in the middle period. Ryan Kujawinski was credited with the only assist on Bastian’s goal. 
 
The Penguins added a goal in the third period for the 6-2 victory over th Devils. Wedgewood stopped 24 of 30 shots in the loss while Jarry denied 15 of 17 he faced in the victory.
 
The Binghamton Devils host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the preseason finale, Sunday, October 1, at 5:05 p.m. inside the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
